In May 2021, as the Delta Variant of COVID-19 caused mayhem and cases peaked at 300,000+ per day, a team of volunteers spread across India and Australia came together under the name of 'Medical Oxygen for All' to raise A$2 million and deliver medical grade breathable oxygen to some of the remotest, rural and inaccessible districts in India. Over the next 55 days, our team shipped 850+ life support devices (oxygen concentrators and BiPaP ventilators) to 79 districts in India across 18 states impacting 10,000+ patients. The effort was widely recognised by the local administration and state governments as well as national and international media.
Impact details, including photos, media coverage and stories from the ground, can be seen here: MOfA PHASE I
As the dust settles, the daily case load reduces and districts ramp up infrastructure, team MOfA has continued to engage with the district administrative and health officials, as well as closely watch the field data coming from the different districts. Based on this, we have identified a severe need for multi-purpose basic life support ambulances in selected backward districts which anticipate severe impact of the expected third wave of COVID-19 and have an acute need of emergency care.
In response to this, and as the next phase of pursuing our mission, we are focusing our efforts on upgrading the public health infrastructure in 10 districts, with the aim of better equipping them for an impending possible third wave. More specifically, phase II will improve the level of emergency first response, a critical piece of infrastructure and capability we have identified to be deficient in the health delivery system.
MOfA has identified 10 districts which are in severe need of emergency first response in the form of multi-purpose basic life support ambulances.
Ambulances are multi-purpose vehicles that can serve a host of functions, for the districts identified, among them:
From amongst the 10 districts identified, the pilot will be supporting two of these with the provisioning of one basic life support ambulance each
Mon District, Nagaland
Tamenglong, Manipur
For piloting multi-purpose basic life support ambulances, MOfA has identified two districts, both part of Government of India's backward regional grants program, and places with severe accessibility issues owing to bad road conditions, that are sparsely populated, have historically had low levels of industrial/economic activity and poor human development indicators.
